Zoladex is a medicine that contains goserelin. Goserelin is a medicine that is used in most hormone based conditions. It is from the LHRH analogues. LHRH or Luteinizing Hormone-Releasing Hormone analogs are drugs that lower the amount of testosterone and estrogen.
What Is Rolodex Used for?
For men, it is used for the treatment of prostate cancer. It reduces the amount of testosterone produced in the male’s testicles.
For women, the drug it is used to treat breast cancer. It is also used as a remedy for Endometriosis. This is a condition where cells normally found in the uterus are found outside of it.
Zoladex is also used to treat uterine fibroids. These are benign growths in the womb. It also helps treat infertility. It helps by making the lining of the womb thinner. This is done in preparation for a surgery in the uterine lining.
General Side Effects
Zoladex, like many other drugs, can cause allergic reactions. These includes rashes, itching, and hives on the skin. Other allergic reactions include swelling of the face, lips and tongue. In some cases, it can even cause shortness of breath.
Zoladex can cause hot flushes, sweating, and reduced sex drive. It can also affect behavior. It can cause mood changes including depression.
Side Effects When Used to Treat Infertility, Uterine Fibroids and Endometriosis
The drug can cause the following side effects:
- Weight gain
- Changes in body hair
- High cholesterol level
- Swelling of the feet and ankle
- Muscle pain and/or stomach pain
- Changes to the voice
- Inflammation of the Vagina
- Nervousness
- Disturbed sleep and tiredness
When used to treat uterine fibroids, there could be a slight increase in the symptoms. These include pain. It is usually felt during the first month of treatment.
Bleeding can also be experienced. This is associated with fibroid degeneration. Fibroid degeneration is the process wherein the fibroid is shrinking.
How Often Do You Need to Take Zoladex for Uterine Fibroid Treatment?
One packet of Zoladex contains 3.6 milligrams. It should be injected by a nurse or doctor once every 28 days. This is done up to three months before surgery.
If the patient experiences severe pain and discomfort, she must seek medical help at once.
Things to take note of
Zoladex should not be given to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Women who have undiagnosed vaginal bleeding are also not allowed to have Zoladex injection.
Children are also not to be given this medication. People who are allergic to goserelin and other ingredients of the medicine should not be injected with Zoladex.
It is best to have a thorough physical examination before being injected with Zoladex.
Zoladex can have adverse reactions with other medications. Tell your doctor if you are taking other medications. This is for them to check if it is okay for you to have both medicines.
Those who have high blood pressure and heart or blood vessel conditions should be cautious in having this injection. This is because the risk of heart rhythm problems may be increased when using Zoladex.
